As the leaves begin to change color and fall to the ground, it's time to start thinking about getting your garden landscape ready for winter.
Here are our 6 Easy Steps to Follow!

1. Make sure that your garden landscape is able to withstand colder weather such as wind, rain, snow, and ice.

By this, we mean choosing plants and shrubs that are hardy and can survive in colder climates. Boxwood shrubs and Japanese Acer are both made of tough stuff and can survive even the coldest of winters as do Clematis and Coronilla.

2. Another important factor to take into consideration is to make sure that your garden landscaping is easily accessible and safe.

We recommend using a jet washer to clear away algae and moss paying particular attention to areas of your garden that can become slippery like patios, pathways, and decking.

Clear away any ground-level overgrown bushes that can act as a trip hazard and branches that stick out at head level to prevent eye injuries.

3. You can easily create the perfect winter landscape by adding a firepit so you can still sit outside on a cold evening. Why not use it to toast marshmallows on Bonfire Night?

And new garden lighting can help to accentuate the natural features of your outdoor space and create an inviting ambiance. Solar-powered lights are a popular choice because they are environmentally friendly and easy to install. LED lights are also becoming increasingly popular due to their long lifespan and energy efficiency.

When selecting garden lights, it is important to consider the overall design of the space and choose lights that will complement the existing features of your home.

4. Clear away any dead leaves or debris from your lawn and garden beds.

This will help prevent diseases and pests from living in your garden and allow vital sunlight to get to your lawn and plants.

Give your overgrown bushes a trim to encourage healthy regrowth.

Dry, raked leaves make the perfect shelter for hedgehogs. Try keeping your hedgehog home dry by piling the leaves up against a fence or wall and propping some wood or plastic against it.

5. If you have potted plants like Bay Trees and Kumquat, then bring them inside or put them in your greenhouse, as they won’t cope very well in the winter and may die.

If you don’t have room to bring your plants inside or don't have a greenhouse, then bubble wrap the roots and the pot to prevent the harsh winter frost from damaging them. Just remember to keep a little opening so you can still water them.

6. In the winter, food is scarce for many animals including birds, but you can help our feathered friends by adding a garden bird feeder.

Nuts, seeds, and fat balls will help them keep up the energy levels needed to survive the winter.
